The National Pathway – Road to Nationals is the highest level of competition available for junior players in Alberta. Juniors competing in this series collect rankings points that will earn them an invitation to represent Alberta at the Fischer Junior National Championships.
Selection Process
In April 2025, Tennis Alberta introduced a new Hybrid Selection Process for Junior Nationals. Developed with input from top coaches and the Junior Development Committee, the goal was to create a fair and transparent system that supports player development and strengthens local competition.
How the Hybrid Selection Process Works
Junior players can qualify for Nationals through one of two systems:
- National Rankings
- Provincial Points Race
Each age group has a specific number of spots:
- U12: 1 from National Rankings and 3 from the Points Race
- U14: 2 from National Rankings and 2 from the Points Race
- U16: 3 from National Rankings and 1 from the Points Race
This structure changes by age group to reflect different stages of competitive development. Full details and examples are available in the Junior Nationals Selection Policy and National Selections Overview Sheet.
PROVINCIAL POINTS RACE
The Points Race rewards players who compete in Alberta’s Junior 4-Star and Provincial 5-Star events. Each athlete earns points from Provincials and their best two finishes in 4-Star tournaments within their age group.
Points are tracked by age group only. If a player competes in an older age category, their points apply only to that category.
Tennis Alberta updates the leaderboard after each National Selection Series event. The race resets after each Indoor or Outdoor Nationals to give players a fresh start.
