The 2025 Outdoor Junior Provincial Tennis Championships are in the books. Players from across the province converged at the Red Deer Tennis Club, clashing for six days of intense competition. Just shy of 300 matches were played, with the athletes battled through changing weather conditions, including cool mornings, drizzle, and sweltering mid-summer heat. This competition represented the culmination of months and years of dedicated training, and with coveted spots on the national teams at stake, every point was fought for fiercely.

U12 Boys

The future of Alberta tennis was on full display, and the boys did not disappoint. Out of a stacked field, it was the number 1 and 2 seeds, Nicholas Garcia and Egor Dobrovolsky, reaching the finals. And while Garcia fell in the indoor provincial finals, this time he would not be denied the victory. In one of the matches of the tournament, a back and forth battle of attrition, Garcia outlasted his foe, clinching the third set tiebreaker 10-8.

U12 Girls

In the U12 Girls Singles event, it was once again the two top seeds, Vera Wing and Navya Chawla, going toe-to-toe. En route to the finals, these two dominated their respective halves, playing three matches each, dropping only seven games combined. In another match-of-the-tournament candidate, the girls split the first two sets 6-2, 2-6. In the end, it was Wing who would emerge victorious in the third set tiebreaker, claiming the outdoor title to complement her indoor championship from earlier in the year.

U14 Boys

The U14 Boys Singles event was filled with thrillers, and none more so than the final. For three hours in the sweltering heat, Ezekiel Cheruvallath and Kingston Ireland, the two top seeds, delivered an edge-of-your-seat spectacle. After dropping the first set 1-6, Cheruvallath battled back, taking a contested second set 7-5. In the deciding third set, Cheruvallath maintained the momentum and edged out Ireland 6-4 to secure the title. With this victory, Cheruvallath now holds both the 2025 Indoor and Outdoor Provincial crowns.

The U14 doubles event saw singles finalists Ezekiel Cheruvallath and Kingston Ireland team up, a pairing that was destined for the finals. After a relatively comfortable run, the boys met their match in Vihaan Patel and Attila Sanjevic, who pushed them to the brink. Cheruvallath and Ireland ultimately prevailed 8-7, becoming both the Indoor and Outdoor Provincial Doubles Championships for the year.

U14 Girls

The U14 Girls singles competition was fierce. From a talented field of 16, Zimo Bai and Kendra Zhang emerged into the championship match. Bai commanded the field on her way to the final, dropping only four games in three matches, earning a shot to dethrone the defending champion, Zhang. The fight was admirable, but Zhang ultimately prevailed 6-3, 6-4, completing the 2025 indoor and outdoor double championship victory.

U16 Boys

The U16 boys’ field featured a mix of familiar faces and new talent. In the end it was two established players, Morgan Lee and David Horvath, who clashed in an anticipated final. For Horvath, the third time was the charm: After reaching this event’s final in both 2023 and 2024, he finally claimed claimed victory.

U16 Girls

The U16 girls brought the heat, and out of a deep field, two athletes rose above the rest. Katherine Kobzar was on a mission, playing a clean game and winning comfortably on her way to the final. Zimo Bai went on another remarkable run, defeating multiple seeded players, including the Indoor Provincials champion, en route to the final. In the end, Kobzar, who was the Indoor Provincials runner-up, proved too much to handle and would not be denied the title this time.

U18 Boys

The U18 boys event was abuzz with talent and hopefulness, many eyeing their best shot at a provincial title. David Horvath and Ilia Dobrovolsky fought their way to the final, each overcoming three-set matches in the semifinals. Horvath, the 2024 runner-up, found redemption, overcoming Dobrovolsky in a brilliant 6-3, 6-3 win.

U18 Girls

There were no easy routes to the final. Nor any easy matches for any of the girls. But from a competitive field, Flora Zhang and Amaris Khotin-Fialkov battled their way to the end. Zhang and Khotin-Fialkov each orchestrated an upset in the semifinals, taking down the 1 and 2 seeds, respectively. And in one of the tournament’s final and best matches, the two went the distance. After a long, grueling battle, Khotin-Fialkov earned the win, besting Zhang 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
