Tennis Officials share a passion for tennis. The Tennis Canada Officiating Program includes more than 300 officials across the country working at the local, provincial, national, and international levels. The program is responsible for the training, certification, designation, and evaluation of all officials in Canada. The Tennis Canada Officiating team works closely with Tennis Alberta in the training, coordination, and assignment of officials.

Become an Official
Officiating is a great way for tennis enthusiasts and players to stay connected to the game they love. Whether you’re interested in line calling, chair umpiring, or becoming a roving umpire, officiating offers a unique way to contribute to the sport.
Tennis Canada’s Officiating Program is responsible for the training, certification, designation, and evaluation of all tennis officials in the country. The program also coordinates officials at major events, including:
- ATP, WTA, and ITF Pro Circuit tournaments
- The National Bank Open in both Toronto and Montreal
- International competitions such as Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup
- Canadian national championships (junior, senior, and wheelchair)
Becoming an official starts with attending an Introduction to Officiating clinic. These sessions are typically run by Provincial Tennis Associations, such as Tennis Alberta, and cover the key officiating roles: line umpire, chair umpire, and roving umpire. From there, the next step is gaining hands-on experience at tournaments. Most officials begin with local or provincial junior events, progressing to higher-level tournaments such as national juniors, ITF Pro Circuit events, and eventually professional events like the National Bank Open. Along the way, officials attend more advanced clinics to continue developing their skills.
