Saville was host once again to the Alberta Open, now in it’s 112th edition. The competition delivered five packed days of competition, community, and celebration. With more than 200 matches played, an assortment of new features and activities, this year brought a new look to a historic event.

Mixed Doubles Open finalists, Prashant Kumar and Amelie Savage celebrate in their semi final match.

Wednesday community day

We kicked things off with our Community Day events, including Youth Try Tennis and Women Wine Wednesday, which brought together players from across the city.

It was a beautiful evening to kick off the Alberta Open. Shout out to Erin Silverman of Oilers Entertainment group who brought a ton of prizes and auction items.

Gold Sponsors

This year also welcomed back Lexus of Edmonton, joining Dunlop as Gold Sponsors. The Saville Tennis Centre once again generously donated countless hours of court time and man hours to facilitate the event.

The Open champions

In the Women’s Open Singles, Felicia Phan captured her first Alberta Open title after two runner-up finishes, defeating Fallon Nguyen 6-2, 6-3. In the Men’s Open Singles, Liam Spiers defended his title with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Keenan Desmarais, securing his third Alberta Open championship.

In Men’s Open Doubles, Jeff and Liam Spiers reclaimed the championship following two consecutive runner-up finishes, edging Carson Bell and Prashant Kumar 6-3, 6-4. Marena Nakagawa and Emily Granson powered through two family duos to take the Women’s Open Doubles crown. Sophie Stanton and Carson Bell claimed the Mixed Open Doubles title in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker over Prashant Kumar and Amelie Savage.

Bonus events and features

We partnered with Longroof Brewing Co., who contributed to the weekend’s festivities with a selection of beers, ciders, and non-alcoholic beverages. On Saturday night, players gathered at their taproom and patio for more bevvys, games, and prizes.

Charlie Gibson, Tennis Alberta’s Administrative Assistant, put financials aside to administer cold ones at the beer garden.

Also new this year, we added a few bonus events for the players. The One-Point Tournament, for instance, was a fast-paced 32-player draw where every match was decided by a single point.

Bahman Sobbi took home a cool $100 for winning the One-Point Tournament over Matthew Ottwell, who risked a big serve and faulted in the final match.

With rain and limited court time, we ran a consolation tiebreak challenge in lieu of full consolation draws. Players formed groups with players in their gender/categories and played round robins for bonus prizes.

Thank you sponsors, partners, supporters

A huge thank-you to everyone who helped make the 112th Alberta Open a success: sponsors, partners, players, coaches, and supporters of all kind.

Special thanks to Lexus of Edmonton, Dunlop, Saville Community Sports Centre, DLA Piper, Water Works Renovations, Penn, Kevin’s Rocks-N-Racquets, and Save-On-Foods for their contributions.
