Women's Doubles Finalists: Jennifer Cherneski, Olga Tsymbal, Jennifer Bishop, and Andreanne Martin

In August, ten of our Masters players journeyed to Toronto to compete in the prestigious Steve Stevens Masters Tennis Championships. Facing tough competition from over 600 players nationwide, our team showcased their dedication and talent, with several making deep runs all the way to the champion matches.

Notable performances

  • Calgary Tennis Club member, Joe Forrayi, reached the semi-finals in the MS75 and teamed up with Fernand Martin to make it to the MD75 finals!
  • Gillian Shea, a Derrick Club member, partnered with Michelle Hall to advance to the WD70 semi-finals, where they fought hard but narrowly lost to the eventual champions.
  • Jennifer Cherneski, a member of the Royal Glenora Club, and Olga Tsymbal battled their way to the championship match in the WD50 event, just missing out on the win. Cherneski also reached the semi-finals in the WS50 event.
  • Shawna Lalande from the Glencoe Club advanced to the quarterfinals, facing the eventual champion in a tough match.

Alberta wins “Event of the Year” honours

At the tournament, Tennis Canada announced the winners of the 2023 Masters Excellence Awards, and one of the trophies would be coming home with our squad. The “Event of the Year” title went to the Western Canadian Indoor Masters Championships, hosted in Edmonton, AB, between the Royal Glenora Club and The Derrick Club.

Tennis Canada and Tennis Alberta extend huge thanks and congratulations to the organizing committee led by Jen Cherneski and Gillian Shea. Special recognition also goes to Royal Glenora Tennis Manager, Ryan Schroffel, and The Derrick Club Tennis Director, Marvin Hinds, for their hard work on a superb event.
