Over the final three weekends in August, players took to the courts at the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre (ATC) to play, celebrate, raise money, and carry on the tradition of one of Tennis Alberta’s signature events.

The Phillip Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament, traditionally held over the Canada Day weekend at the Calgary Tennis Club, found a new home in 2026 at ATC. Across Rising Stars, Junior, and Adult events, more than 250 participants competed.

With the event at risk of cancellation, ATC opened their doors to Patrick and Sylvia Thomas to honour the tradition and keep the tournament going:

“Patrick and Sylvia have been ATC members and dedicated supporters of Alberta’s tennis community for more than 40 years. We are proud to help continue this event at the ATC and build its future as the tournament’s official home, while honouring Phillip Thomas and raising awareness for mental health.”

Remembering Phillip Thomas (1994 – 2019)

Phillip Thomas passed away in 2019 after a mental health battle. He was 25 years old.

Phillip had a passion for tennis beginning at a young age when he was introduced to the sport. He grew up around the Calgary Tennis Club and displayed natural talent, which led him to train in the Tennis Academy High Performance program. He later became a member of the University of Calgary Dinos tennis team.

This tournament honours Phillip and everyone impacted by mental health struggles. Thanks to the many participants, generous sponsors, and the countless individuals who came together to make this event possible, this year’s tournament raised $18,665.00 for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Calgary Chapter.

All proceeds directly fund CMHA Calgary’s EQUIPPED Program, which delivers courses and workshops providing youth and young adults with practical mental health education and resilience skills.

Raffle prizes and mental health resources on display at ATC, made possible through the generous support of donors and sponsors.

“Deep appreciation to ATC, sponsors, volunteers, and players for contributing to the continued success of the PTMT, resulting in a generous donation to CMHA. Now looking forward to the 2027 PTMT!”
